Battery rules go live. Who’s ready?

December 3, 2025

Since 18 August 2025, producers must run legacy and new battery portfolios separately. By February 2027, the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) will make those choices provable. Circunomics’ new white paper and live demo show how to turn regulation into real-world operations.

What’s changing (in plain terms)

  • Two portfolios, two flows: Everything placed on the market before 18 August 2025 is handled differently from everything after. Budgets, contracts, and reporting must split accordingly.
  • Proof beats promise: The DBP will require verifiable data – health, chemistry, chain of custody, and recovery results – for every decision on repair, reuse, or recycling.
  • Operational, not academic: This is real-world execution with fewer unnecessary shipments, faster routing, and evidence you can provide to a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) or authority without rework.

How Circunomics helps companies stay ahead

Circunomics integrates registration data, operational routing, and verified treatment outcomes into one consistent data flow. This approach reduces administrative gaps, avoids bottlenecks, and provides clear compliance evidence for PROs and regulators.

“Europe’s battery rules are shifting from paperwork to proof,” said Felix Wagner, CEO of Circunomics. “The companies that can show their data, not just talk about it, will lead the way. Every repair, reuse, or recycling decision backed by evidence.”

“Once the data moves with the battery, everything changes,” added Jan Born, CTO of Circunomics. “You avoid unnecessary transport, make reuse practical where it adds value, and reach recycling targets that actually hold up.”

Why it matters

This isn’t a policy think piece. It’s an operations story with a countdown: a split liability date in 2025 and a mandatory passport in 2027. Producers, PROs and recyclers, that can continuously prove their decisions, will control costs, reduce risk, and keep more battery value in Europe.

What’s available today

  • Media and industry briefing: Circunomics experts are available for interviews or editorial briefings on how Europe’s producers and recyclers are preparing for the 2025 and 2027 Battery Regulation deadlines, and what early implementation is revealing about the challenges ahead.
  • White paper: Europe’s Battery Reckoning: Extended Producer Responsibility in the Age of Digital Compliance – a practical guide that connects regulation with real operations.

About Circunomics

Circunomics connects verified battery data with every lifecycle step so teams can choose the right next action – repair, reuse, or recycle – and prove it. That means fewer wasted miles, safer logistics, faster second-life where it makes sense, and recycling outcomes that stand up to scrutiny.

Headquartered in Mainz, Circunomics works with producers, operators, Producer Responsibility Organisations, and recyclers across Europe to turn compliance into competitive advantage. Learn more at circunomics.com.
